I hope this article does not discourage anyone from becoming a teacher. Teaching, like any other career requires a lot of hard work and long hours when you're starting out. I have been teaching for six years and I can't see myself in any other field. I graduated from Rust College in 2003 and have been teaching elementary school since then. Although my degree is in mass communications, I feel education was a great career path for me. I still use a lot of the things I learned in mass communication in my classroom. I was lucky to start my career in a teacher mentoring program. Experienced educators helped guide me through my first two years as a teacher through an alternative certification program. The most important thing I learned during that time was organization. Now I am able to work full time as a fifth grade teacher, go to school, and participate in an administrator mentoring program. Teaching is a challenging career, but it is never boring. Each day I am faced with new challenges and that is what most people look for in a career.
